Balance

Editorial for Vanguard Magazine ISSUE 36

This project began with Angela’s personal reflection on what it means to maintain balance in life.

Henri Matisse once said, “What I dream of is an art of balance…” Balance is also a key element in art—when we see a balanced composition, it has an instant calming effect on the mind.

The same applies to life. We call something "well balanced" when it feels whole—a complete form, an ideal situation, a steady rhythm.

But does perfect balance really exist? We all crave it, but it’s nearly impossible to achieve. It’s easy to lean too far in one direction or the other. But maybe that constant shifting is part of finding balance.

This photo series explores that question through both symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes, forms, and silhouettes.
